Snowy Valentine Day

Photo by Rick Hartford / Hartford Courant

This a photo of my sister Cindy sledding with her oldest daughter Kaci. The snowstorm was the first of the season for us Hartford-ites. It seemed like the City’s Department of Public Works put out their rookie team to do this one because everyone and their mom complained about the streets and their conditions.

I called Hartford’s newly created 311 Line around 3pm and the operator told me that all plows were out doing the big streets first…I’m on Capitol Avenue…There are only 4 streets bigger than this one and I didn’t see a city plow til after 6pm. Regardless, the streets look ok now (3pm Thursday) and now that DPW has this under their belt, they’re ready for the next one. If there is a next one.
This brings me to a thought… How horrible would it be to tax out of city residents who work in the city .5% for the year and apply 100% of that money to the city streets? If people in the burbs know the money is going to something that directly effects them, they should be cool with it.

  • amen!

What big streets were they plowing? This morning and in the afternoon, Famington Avenue and Wethersfield Ave. were both very slushy and dangerous.

  • i’m at the store from early til late and don’t see the rest of the city…so I can’t comment on other areas but i’ve heard sentiments echoing your. one would think that the one time you get a big one you would actually be prepared :-)

  • Wow, great picture!

I wasn’t in the area so I didn’t see it, but I remember this from several years ago when I commuted to work along New Park Ave. You could almost find the city line based on the condition of the road. The West Hartford side was nicely plowed, but as soon as you hit Hartford it became an exercise in trying to stay on the road. Sounds this might still be the case.

  • Cindy

Dave hit it right on the button on both topics. GREAT PIC of me w/ my daughter and the only way to tell you’re OUT of Hartford is when you can actually feel your car driving as opposed to sliding all over the road.
In my case it’s heading Northwest – so as soon as I hit the old Cadillac Dealer on Albany Ave -going towards The Village – it’s smooth sailing all the way home. WHuT ‘DA * ? CLEAN THE DOGGONE ROAD ALREADY!

  • Nice pic by my colleague Rick Hartford, it’s just a classic snow/mom/daughter/Hartford (the city) moment. I ended up driving around the messy city streets, pulling over where I probably should not pull over, looking for images and generally trying to be safe first. gracias, P.
