Weekend Update…

Just a quick update on relevent Hartford happenings reported this weekend in The Hartford Courant:

  • Thirman Milner filed for papers to run for (you guessed it) Hartford Mayor. This might be a power play against I. Charles Matthew as Milner ally and former Mayor Carrie Saxon Perry and Mr. I have had their differences in the past.
  • Stan “don’t call me Homer” Simpson continued beating the horse with another “in depth” column on Mayor Perez and his botched attempt to make nicey with Abe Giles. This is the same guy who wanted to end the Ken Kreyeske soap opera as soon as it started.
  • The Courant unveiled a seperate insert named Outlook 2007 giving it’s two cents on everything from Labor & Jobs to Health Care to Downtown to Manufacturing. I’m still going thru it and noticed that they did a spotlight on an old friend Lisa Hurley (although I think it’s only in the online edition, cuz I can’t find it in print anywhere). Basically a well put together resource to have but the Arts portion of the insert disappointed me. The Courant stayed true to it’s elitist view of arts by focusing on the usual suspects (The Casino’s, The Wadsworth, The Bushnell, etc…) It begins the Arts section with “Aside from the Webster Theater…” Hellloooooo, What about Melao on Arch Street? What about the countless bars employing local musicians and catering to a professional Latino populace by offering weekly Latin Jazz happy hours? They label all the listed items as examples of “high-culture offerings”…(insert sarcastic rebuttal here)
  • finally…a touching rememberance on the life of Trinity professor Hugh Ogden by Anne Hamilton.
