HIMC video page and Jena 6 Video

I went to a pretty inspirational march on Saturday (September 29) in support of the Jena 6 and in protest to overriding injustices in our present court system. I was particularly struck by the passion of Kamora Harrington, mother of an African American male and community activist. Of all the speakers either before and after, she made the early morning wakeup worth it. Cornell Lewis was his usual awesome self except he walks like a madman so the march route took all of 4 minutes! :-) The most encouraging thing were the number of parents/grandparents who brought their children with them. Young children need to see that it is ok to question authority. Just because something is the status quo does not make it right. These children must never forget what steps were taken to allow them to be where they are today and what steps they will have to take for their own.

The Hartford Independent Media Center has the whole thing on video if one cares to check it out. Their YouTube page is here.

  • My blog has photos. It impressed me that a current and former mayor marched in support of the Jena 6, something that doesn’t happen in many other cities.

I too was pleased to see people bringing their children and grandkids along. I think that part of what shaped my own path as an activist was being hauled to one big rally by my own parents when I was 9 or 10.
