New presence to old friends

Long over due props need to goto the folks over at the Hartford Independent Media Collective.  For a number of months now they have moved over to their new online presence…and it is snaaaaaazyyyyy.

My experience working in DC opened my eyes to the world of more progressive / radical thought in the states.  I DJ’d for a wonderful low power radio station in Columbia Heights and learned about the Indy Media movement from the DC Indymedia peeps.  I was so enraptured by the experience that I came back ready to start my own…but there was one already here!

With different pockets of people talking about creating a better way of delivering news regarding our fair city, one need to go no further than these original gees to see an example of how it can be done.  And this new web site shows that they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.  For those who might have still have issues with Hartford IMC (no names mentioned) I would suggest a casual stop over the internets to their new site.  You’ll see a new cast of writers who are doing some quality stuff.  This does lead to my only critiscm which is that maybe there’s too much dependance on one writer (meghanquinn) but that looks to be changing as David Samuels is about to let loose on the organizing world with his writings.  I do need to say that Meghan Quinn is one hell of a writer.

But by far, the IMC’s strength is its very learned followers.  The comments on the posts dictate the tone of thoughtful, intelligent conversation.  People aren’t afraid to have some really strong conversations and not end up hating anybody.  This leads to more open conversations on posts which, inturn, make the posts that much better.  This is a recipe for longevity and now, going on their seventh year, The Hartford IMC have positioned themselves even moreso to be the true voice of the people online.
