It’s safe to say that the days of “What’s there to do in Hartford?” are over. Conventional wisdom has destroyed that always untrue perception of the City. The question now isn’t “What is there to do?” but “How can I find out about it?” While The Courant’s Cal section is to be envied in its deliverance of this type of info, their online presense suffers form the same confusion as the rest of Courant.com. The Advocate is getting better but, lets face it, they are NOT an arts & entertainment weekly.
But quietly a small group of individuals have started to use email as their tool of choice to inform people on the cultural happenings of the city and the region. Here’s a short list with contact info:
This Weeks Line-up (subscribe with donaldojamaica@yahoo.com)
Hartford’s reigning king of the creative class, Maurice is everywhere. One couple I talked to told me that they new they were in a happenign place when Maurice came through the door. He’s a Community Activist, DJ, Yoga practitioner and instructor and a kick ass dancer. And some time ago he started getting information out about weekly highlights that interest him…that’s the key thing. If it has Maurice’s stamp of approval, it must be good.
Latin Music Tonight (subscribe @ www.latinmusictonight.com)
Florencia brings us all things Latino. From Salsa nights to Flamenco concerts to Mariachi, this woman has it all.
Hartford’s Free (subscribe with annecubberly@gmail.com)
Another email blast that doesn’t take too much to figure out. Hartford – Free, yup…that’s it. You’ll be surprised after reading how many cool things there are to do for nada!!
7 Day A&E Forecast (subscribe @ www.letsgoarts.org)
The Granddaddy of them all and part of Ken Kahn’s Legacy is the thurough 7 Day Forecast. A tip of the hat to the person who has to put this one together. It never misses a week, covers a lot, and is packed with stuff. The only down side is that it’s almost impossible to see where to sign up for it on their web site. The web site itself is an exercise in frustration but if you stick through it you’ll get a good one.
Can anyone else think of any others?
