Nosotros, el pueblo...

*** update: I misspelled Wareing, when referring to Mrs. Wareing in both this post as well as a subsequent comment. I have corrected the spelling on both. My apologies to the Wareings. ***

Well, with CityLine being as updated as IonHartford, there seems to be only one outlet that is delving into the underpinnings of the fancy, screwed up web we call City Hall.

That’s right folks, Kevin Brookman’s own We the People, is our blog of choice for the juiciness that is the back room politics of the city. His latest post is a very well researched and retold account of the goings on leading up to the upcoming Democratic Town Committee elections in March.

Speaking of CityLine, Jeff Cohen has found his way to NPR and is doing similar reporting on local political news.

Here’s his latest story on this very issue with the Democratic Town Committee. Funny think is that in the story we’re asked to believe that names like Kennelly and DiBella in Hartford equals change :-) … good one.  Although Rebecca Wareing in the report does sound very sincere in her dissatisfaction with the status quo. Which says alot about the medium of radio and its ability to cut through the bs of verbal spin.

Look forward to my own post with endorsements closer to election time.

Oh Luis: Mr. Kennelly and Mr. Dibella are hardly controlling the unsatisfactory political power being complained of and constantly mentioned by Mr. Brookman and Mr. Cohen. On the contrary, voters’ current dissatisfaction with government stems from the lack of change exhibited by the current city council and administration. That is the power base being spoken about and that people want changed.

Perhaps you should critic the council’s actions and those of the DTC members who serve at the pleasure of the current administration.

    Sincerely,
    your humble log.

  • Oh Thompson: Only you can strive to make political mountains out of humorous molehills… Again, you point directly to Mr. Kennelly and Mr, DiBella when my mention was more to the family names (very well known family names in Hartford) within the context of change. If/when Mr. Kennelly puts his hat in the ring for Mayor, he will have more than his fair chance to speak to the change that he wants to see and bring to the city. I look forward to Mark blazing his own trail in service to the City. But to have a report where the talking points center around “change” and have the participants in that report be Harris, Kenelly, DiBella, Winch, and Wareing is just, y’know, kinda funny.

Luis: Your point is well taken, except I remain steadfast (and believe any thinking person would agree)that the “change” in Cohen’s report is specifically change from the current adminsitration at City Hall, not change from years of the same political families controlling city government. That being said, and you being part of that current administration, I would hope your “humorous molehill” was not meant to deflect attention from the change people are clamoring for…

  • Thom: I doubt that my blog which has like 15 hits at last notice can help deflect attention from anything. That being said, I think we agree that there are many different reason to call for change (you listed two.) I’ll goto one of my favorite quotes attributed to former Mayor Carrie Saxon Perry: “People want to change the Bus Driver, but they don’t want to change the direction the bus is going.” Hartford didn’t become the 2nd poorest city in the nation overnight, and it definitely did not happen over the past two years. We’re talking years and years of patronage and ‘business as usual’ politics coming from the main power brokers in the city. You touched on a vital differentiation between your two posts with your use of “voters” and “people.” I would submit to you that what constitutes “change” that one (the voter) wants, is vastly different than what the other (the people) want. And that want (and need) is represented in the form of apathy at the voting booth towards ALL of our elected officials, which includes both you and I.
