New presence to old friends

Long over due props need to goto the folks over at the Hartford Independent Media Collective.  For a number of months now they have moved over to their new online presence…and it is snaaaaaazyyyyy.

My experience working in DC opened my eyes to the world of more progressive / radical thought in the states.  I DJ’d for a wonderful low power radio station in Columbia Heights and learned about the Indy Media movement from the DC Indymedia peeps.  I was so enraptured by the experience that I came back ready to start my own…but there was one already here! Downtown Parking…

Capitol Avenue Brownstones
For two and a half years I lived on the corner of Capitol and Hudson. A beautiful one bedroom basement apartment in one of the many incredible brownstones on the block. I was working at the time at The Bushnell Center for Performing Arts and had a relatively short commute of about 5 minutes by foot. I was a hop, skip and a jump from Bushnell Park (Monday Night Jazz) and Downtown. I was right off the highway and a 10 minute walk to Park Street for cheap beer and good food. My problem…I owned a car. Continue reading Downtown Parking…

Museum of the City of Hartford?

Old State House

Two summers ago, a couple friends and I took one of many ritualistic art day trips to New York City. Find parking on the upper west side, take subway down to central park and walk through to the east side at about 105th street. We would go to El Museo del Barrio on 5th Avenue and follow it up with some good Puerto Rican food at La Fonda Boricua on 106th. This particular day we took a detour and stopped at the Museum of the City of New York to see an exhibit titled El Barrio: Puerto Rican New York. A look at the museum’s web site gives a nice overview of their mission:

The Museum of the City of New York embraces the past, present, and future of New York City and celebrates the city’s cultural diversity. It does so through its rich collections, a lively schedule of exhibitions, and an array of programs for adults and children. The Museum is dedicated to fostering an understanding of New York’s evolution from its origins as a settlement of a few hundred Europeans, Africans, and Native Americans to its present status of one of the world’s largest and most important cities.

Front Street is back on…or is it?

Aaaah…this rollercoaster is off again. The Hartford City Council (aka the coalition of the bullied and bought) approved a 15 year, $12 million tax abatement deal with Bradley Nitkin of the HB Nitkin Group. The deal is for the expected development of the Front Street branch of Adriaen’s Landing which is now on it’s third developer. Who is Bradley Nitkin? Mr. Nitkin is a Yalie who went to school with our esteemed President. He tried his hand at the social justice thing while working for a Great Society anti-poverty agency after college, he made a financial 180° after that experience and is now in charge of a Greenwich based development firm.
